It wasn’t an earnings week, but there was still some interesting turnover in the Magic Formula Investing screens over the past week.
Cal Maine Foods (CALM) was a name we haven’t seen in a while. We reviewed the stock a looong way back. It is one of the largest egg producers in the United States. Due to factors such as avian flu and new cage-free chicken laws, the price of eggs has skyrocketed, which has been a boon to CALM’s profitability. The market is just starting to bid up the stock, but the sustainability of high egg prices is the question here.
Also, a couple new smaller-cap biotech stocks entering the screen in Depomed (DEPO) and AMAG Pharmaceuticals Inc (AMAG). Depomed we’ve seen before, but the stock price is now tied to the movement of Horzon Pharma (HZNP), as that company has an outstanding (hostile) bid in. AMAG is an interesting, fast-growing biotech with a few novel compounds.
